In 2025, we searched for a way to celebrate the achievements of Tasmania players and challenge our players across the state in fairly even competitions. Out of this desire, a tournament was born,

The Black Square Invitational

On Saturday, the 13th of December, we divided the Tasmanian chess community into groups of 50 according to ACF Rapid ratings. The Top 50 were called the Master League, the next 50 were called the King League etc, down to our beginner players in the Bishop League.

The tournament was a raging success with the goal of 50 players well surpassed with 148 players on the day! Thank you for all of our players and especially our Master League players for showing up.
